No Globes, No Grammys and No Oscars?
We already saw the Globes announced in a boring press conference. The Grammys are likely to be denied a waiver so that isn't going to be the spectacle it normally would is. Variety has an article floating the idea that there could be two differents Oscars shows.Amid the pervasive uncertainty created by the WGA strike, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is forging ahead with plans for the Feb. 24 Oscar ceremony. But the Academy is also planning two different shows -- the usual kudocast and an alternative event if the scribes are still out.
It isn't clear how there could be an Oscars without writers or actors which is what is likely to happen if the strike continues.
Oscarcast producer Gil Cates supplied few details as to what form the alternative show would take, simply saying at a meeting at Acad headquarters that they'd have to "play it by ear," according to one attendee.
But it's likely that the alternative show would rely on industry heavyweights penning their own speeches and presenting the awards.

Taxable Emmy and Oscar Gift Bags
The IRS has ruined some of Hollywood's fun by declaring the gift bags celebrities receive at award shows are taxable income. The Internal Revenue Service and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences yesterday announced they have reached a settlement on undisclosed taxes owed to the government on the "gifts" received at the Oscars in the last several years, through 2005. The academy also announced it will no longer give out the bags, saying the board quietly voted last April to end the practice. In recent years, the academy has given the bags -- also known as gift bags or swag -- to as many as 200 hosts, performers and winners on Oscar night. "There's no special red-carpet tax loophole for the stars," IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson said in a prepared statement. "Whether you're popping the popcorn, sitting in the audience or starring on the big screen, you need to respect the law and pay your taxes."
The gifts bags did seem to be getting larger and more elaborate year after year. ShoppingBlog.com has more information about taxable swag bags.
Typically, if the IRS finds someone has failed to pay taxes but no fraud is involved, it assesses back taxes, interest and penalties for only the preceding three years. In this instance, if 200 people received $100,000 baskets in each of the three years through 2005, the taxable non-cash income would be $60 million. Neither IRS spokesmen nor Academy spokeswoman Leslie Unger would confirm or deny that number. Nor would they say whether, under the terms of the settlement, the IRS forgave back payment, interest and penalties. Nor would they say whether the Academy has paid a lump sum on behalf of past recipients.

Primetime Emmy Award Winners Announced
The winners of the Primetime Emmy Awards were announced Sunday. Everybody Loves Raymond and Lost picked up top awards. Winners actors and actresses included Tony Shalhoub, James Spader, Felicity Huffman and Patricia Arquette. MSNBC.com has a write-up about the show.
Everybody loved Raymond one more time, honoring the show Sunday as best comedy series for its final season. That denied the prize to newcomer Desperate Housewives while giving best drama honors to another first-year hit, Lost.
First-time Emmy Award Winner Felicity Huffman graciously thanked her Desperate Housewives co-stars:
"All year long they've been asking us, 'Do you think, now that your show is going, is this the end of the sitcom?'" said Everybody Loves Raymond executive producer Phil Rosenthal. "I want to say, yes. Beyond that, it's the end of laughing and the end of smiling."
Felicity Huffman and Patricia Arquette became first-time Emmy winners as they received lead actress honors while Tony Shalhoub and James Spader once again proved favorites in the best actor category."I've turned into one of those actresses and I'm sorry," Huffman, who plays an overwhelmed homemaker on ABC’s Desperate Housewives, said as she teared up at the start of her acceptance speech.
For more information about the winners E Online has a complete scorecard listing all the winners and the TV Squad blog live blogged the award show here.
She thanked "the women of Wisteria Lane," her co-stars Marcia Cross and Teri Hatcher - also nominees in the category - and Nicollette Sheridan and Eva Longoria.

Nominations have been announced for the 57th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and took the lead with 16 each. They were followed by Desperate Housewives and Will and Grace with 15. Everybody Loves Raymon had 13 nominations and Lost had 12. E Online says the Emmy Noms look "desperate."Desperate Housewives, TV's most watched new series of the 2004-05 season, now becomes TV's most nominated series in the race for the 57th Annual Primetime Emmys. It is a title shared with NBC's Will & Grace, which despite declining ratings scored nods for all of its stars (save Debra Messing), and several of its game stunt-casting participants. Only the HBO made-for-TV movies, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and Warm Springs, hoarded more nominations--16 each--as the award-show field was announced at a predawn press conference in North Hollywood, California.
Though not short on drama, ABC's suburbia-skewering Housewives is competing as a comedy. As such, stars Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman will vie for Lead Comedy Series Actress honors against Everybody Loves Raymond's Patricia Heaton, a past winner, and Malcolm in the Middle's Jane Kaczmarek, a six-time nominee.
