Justin Timberlake to Host Oscars?

Justin TimberlakeThere are rumors that Justin Timberlake is being considered as a possible Oscars host. An article in contactmusic.com says Oscar producers were impressed with Timberlake's ESPY awards performance.
Oscars bosses were wowed by Timberlake's naturally funny performance as the frontman for the ESPY Awards last month (Jul08). And they allegedly want him to join the illustrious club of Academy Awards hosts, taking over from 2008 master of ceremonies Jon Stewart.
Some would prefer to see the Daily Show's Jon Stewart back again. New York Magazine's Vulture blog suggests Will Ferrell as an alternative if the producers are trying to get a younger demographic. Another suggestion would be to have movies that more people watch actually win Oscars.

Oscars Vs. MTV Movie Awards

Pink MTV LogoThis isn't the first time we have heard the argument that the MTV Movie Awards are more relevant that the Oscars. This time it is MTV Movie Awards producer Mark Burnett who is making the argument.
"I'm looking forward to incorporating the viewers more than ever before because I consider the MTV Movie Awards to be the most relevant movie award show in America today," Burnett said. "This show honors the movies that millions of young Americans go to see. We will again highlight the interactive culture that is young America."
The MTV Movie Awards do focus on films that many more people went to see last year but you still can't beat the Oscars in importance, viewership and integrity.

No Globes, No Grammys and No Oscars?

We already saw the Globes announced in a boring press conference. The Grammys are likely to be denied a waiver so that isn't going to be the spectacle it normally would is. Variety has an article floating the idea that there could be two differents Oscars shows.
Amid the pervasive uncertainty created by the WGA strike, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is forging ahead with plans for the Feb. 24 Oscar ceremony. But the Academy is also planning two different shows -- the usual kudocast and an alternative event if the scribes are still out.

Oscarcast producer Gil Cates supplied few details as to what form the alternative show would take, simply saying at a meeting at Acad headquarters that they'd have to "play it by ear," according to one attendee.

But it's likely that the alternative show would rely on industry heavyweights penning their own speeches and presenting the awards.
It isn't clear how there could be an Oscars without writers or actors which is what is likely to happen if the strike continues.

Oscar Wins Drive DVD Sales Upward

Variety reports that DVD sales jumped for several Academy Award winning films. Crash saw the biggest spike jumping from 33,000 dvd sales to 207,000 sales the week after it won Best Picture.
"Crash," the Academy Awards' biggest winner, received the biggest sales lift: Lionsgate said DVD sales spiked more than sixfold to 207,000 the week after the film nabbed the best picture Oscar.

That's a huge jump over the 33,000 sold in the previous frame and pushes the pic's total sales to about 4.2 million units since its September release on DVD. The film was also re-released in theaters last week, pulling in some $343,000 on 175 screens for a per-screen average below $2,000. Even if the bulk of consumers bought the $19.98 disc on sale -- certain online retailers are selling it for under $10 -- that still reps spending above $3 million.

Fox said "Walk the Line" DVD sales surely benefited from the pic's lead actress kudos; Johnny Cash biopicbiopic sold more than 1 million units last week; total is more than 6 million units in two weeks of release.
It is great that not only this films getting noticed but people are buying and watching the films as well.

Blogosphere Buzz for Best Actor and Best Actress

BlogPulse has graphs that show the buzz in the blogosphere for the most discussed actors and actresses that are up for the Best Actor and Best Actress Oscars. Heath Ledger looks to be the most discussed of the actors -- part of this may be just because bloggers like talking about Brokeback Mountain. The most discussed actress is less clear but Keira Knightley and Reese Witherspoon appear to be discussed more by bloggers than the other nominees. Reese Witherspoon also has the recent Bafta win going for her. It won't be long before we know if the blogosphere was right.
