Andy Samberg to Host MTV Movie Awards

Andy SambergAndy Samberg is going to host this year's MTV Movie Awards.
Andy Samberg is set to front the 18th annual edition of the cheeky awards show—which will likely be dominated by all things Twilight and Dark Knight—on May 31 at the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City, Calif.

"Andy Samberg has been tapped to be the host," E! News' Ryan Seacrest revealed this morning. "He's great."

"I'm super excited to host the Movie Awards," the comic cutie said in a statement. "I grew up watching the show and a lot of the past hosts are heroes of mine. Plus my friends and I were writers for the show prior to working at SNL, so it will be a sweet and satisfying homecoming. I can't wait to act really important."
Andy Sandberg has also had a number of digital short hits from SNL including Chronicles of Narnia (Lazy Sunday) and I'm on a Boat. It will be fun to see what he does spoofing the big movies.

It will be her first hosting gig.

    No Britney VMA Performance

There will be no Britney Spears at the MTV Video Music Awards this year. TheImproper.com reports that Ryan Searcrest broke the news on his radio show.
Ryan Seacrest broke the news on his radio show, "On Air With Ryan Seacrest" this morning (Aug. 25). Seacrest said he had spoken to Spears' manager Larry Rudolph, who told him "officially and unequivocally" that the pop tart would not get up on the stage to perform.

Rudolph said Spears was "in the middle of recording her next album, which is going amazingly well, and was never supposed to perform at the Sept. 7 show." Hmmmmm. That's funny because Spears has appeared in promotional spots for the awards show with UK comedian and host Russell Brand.
That's too bad because we were hoping Britney would be able to redeem herself from last year's dreadful performance.

Buzz about Britney Spears and the 2008 VMAs

Britney VMAs 2007We know Britney Spears will attend MTV's Video Music Awards because she is up for two awards. We also know she taped a promo for the awards with her and an elephant. The L.A. Times Gold Derby blog reports that the issue of whether Britney Spears will still perform is up in the air. However, the Times does remind us that Britney's miserable performance in 2007 was a ratings boom for MTV.
While appearing with a 900-pound elephant, nobody can call Britney Spears fat again when she's doing a MTV gig.

But that is Britney's costar on the TV screen while dishing with Russell Brand, the little-known British comic who's hosting the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards. It's one of the cheeky promos teasing the Sept. 7 event.

At one point Brand suggests that there is sexual tension between them, but Britney shrugs, "I didn't feel any tension." Wait . . . that supposed to be hilarious, right?

And wait again. Does this mean that Britney will be performing again at the crazy kudofest?
The question is does MTV wan't a ratings boom again? That answer has to be yes and Britney would no doubt like to redeem her troubled performance in 2007.

    Oscars Vs. MTV Movie Awards

Pink MTV LogoThis isn't the first time we have heard the argument that the MTV Movie Awards are more relevant that the Oscars. This time it is MTV Movie Awards producer Mark Burnett who is making the argument.
"I'm looking forward to incorporating the viewers more than ever before because I consider the MTV Movie Awards to be the most relevant movie award show in America today," Burnett said. "This show honors the movies that millions of young Americans go to see. We will again highlight the interactive culture that is young America."
The MTV Movie Awards do focus on films that many more people went to see last year but you still can't beat the Oscars in importance, viewership and integrity.
