Oscars Vs. MTV Movie Awards

Pink MTV LogoThis isn't the first time we have heard the argument that the MTV Movie Awards are more relevant that the Oscars. This time it is MTV Movie Awards producer Mark Burnett who is making the argument.
"I'm looking forward to incorporating the viewers more than ever before because I consider the MTV Movie Awards to be the most relevant movie award show in America today," Burnett said. "This show honors the movies that millions of young Americans go to see. We will again highlight the interactive culture that is young America."
The MTV Movie Awards do focus on films that many more people went to see last year but you still can't beat the Oscars in importance, viewership and integrity.

Lindsay Lohan, Eddie Murphy Dominate Razzies

I Know Who Killed Me and NorbitLindsay Lohan would like to undo her disastrous motion picture: I Know Who Killed Me but the Razzies just won't let it go away. Lohan and her film took home a record 8 Razzie awards out of eleven categories. She even won for Worst Actress twice - for playing both Aubrey and Dakota.Another actor that won dreaded Razzie awards was Eddie Murphy. He won three awards for his performances in Norbit. Thanks to his film Norbit Eddie Murphy won Razzies for Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Supporting Actress and Worst Actor). You can see a complete list of the Razzie winners here.

This is what the Razzies said about Lindsay Lohan's film, "Topping the field with 9 nominations is I Know Who Killed Me, a Lindsay Lohan 'vehicle' that proved as dangerous for its star as any car she ever ran off the road. An oddball cross-breeding of the Hostel/Saw genre of 'teen torture porn' with elements of the old Old Patty Duke Show, I Know stars Lohan as psychically connected twins."

No Globes, No Grammys and No Oscars?

We already saw the Globes announced in a boring press conference. The Grammys are likely to be denied a waiver so that isn't going to be the spectacle it normally would is. Variety has an article floating the idea that there could be two differents Oscars shows.
Amid the pervasive uncertainty created by the WGA strike, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is forging ahead with plans for the Feb. 24 Oscar ceremony. But the Academy is also planning two different shows -- the usual kudocast and an alternative event if the scribes are still out.

Oscarcast producer Gil Cates supplied few details as to what form the alternative show would take, simply saying at a meeting at Acad headquarters that they'd have to "play it by ear," according to one attendee.

But it's likely that the alternative show would rely on industry heavyweights penning their own speeches and presenting the awards.
It isn't clear how there could be an Oscars without writers or actors which is what is likely to happen if the strike continues.

Scorsese Wins Best Director at Critics' Choice Awards

Martin Scorsese's film The Departed has won Best Film at the Critics' Choice Awards. Scorsese also won Best Director. Fox News calls the win a "slight dent" in Dreamgirls shot at an Oscar.
His movie, "The Departed," won Best Film and he took home honors as Best Director. It was Scorsese’s best showing ever at an awards show and a legitimate one at that. He joked to the crowd: "It's the first I tried to make that has a plot."

This big win for "The Departed" puts a slight dent in what looked like a sure Oscar win for "Dreamgirls," which received four awards last night including Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy in the supporting actors categories and two music awards.
The L.A. Times reports that Dreamgirls and Little Miss Sunshine each won four awards.
The lavish musical "Dreamgirls" took home four awards: best supporting actor for Eddie Murphy, best supporting actress for Jennifer Hudson, best song for "Listen," performed by Beyonce Knowles, and best soundtrack.

The comedy "Little Miss Sunshine" also received four awards: best acting ensemble, best writer for Michael Arndt, best young actor for Paul Dano and best young actress for Abigail Breslin.
Other award winners included Helen Mirren (Best Actress), Forest Whitaker (Best Actor), Borat (Best Comedy), Cars (Best Animated), Charlotte's Web (Best Family) and An Inconvenient Truth (Best Documentary). The Critics' Choice Awards ceremony will be broadcast on E! on January 20th, 2007.

Babel Leads Globes With 7 Nominations

ABC News reports that Babel is leading the Golden Globes awards with a total of seven nominations.
Helen Mirren, Leonardo DiCaprio and Clint Eastwood were among the multiple Golden Globe nominees Thursday, while the multinational ensemble drama "Babel" led contenders with seven nominations, including best dramatic picture.

Also nominated for best dramatic picture: the Robert Kennedy story "Bobby," the mob tale "The Departed," the suburban drama "Little Children" and the royalty-in-crisis "The Queen."

A few surprises cropped up among nominees for the 64th annual Globes, Hollywood's second-biggest film honors after the Academy Awards and traditionally a solid forecast for how the Oscars might play out.

Among them: Sacha Baron Cohen's unexpected $100 million hit "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan." The satire of American culture was nominated for best musical or comedy film, while Cohen got a bid for best actor in a musical or comedy.
The Orlando Sentinel film blog notes that double Clint and Leo nominations.
Clint Eastwood was nominated for both WWII Iwo Jima films he directed this past year, Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima.

Leo DiCaprio was nominated for both Blood Diamond and The Departed. Which means some other great performance was ignored in the Globes' grasp at "star power" for their annual pre-Oscars party.
The complete list of the award nominees can be found here.

The Envelope reports that a list of 56 Oscar eligible songs has been released. One of the songs on the list is "O Kazakhstan" from the Borat film.

Some films had multiple songs declared eligible. "Family of Me," "Heist," and "Still" all come from "Over The Hedge." "Cars" was home to "Our Town" and "Real Gone." "Dreamgirls," a presumed Oscar favorite, included the eligible songs "Listen," "Love You I Do," and "Patience."
The L.A. Times says members of the Academy's music branch will meet on January 16 to select the "final 3-5 nominees in the category."

Taxable Emmy and Oscar Gift Bags

The IRS has ruined some of Hollywood's fun by declaring the gift bags celebrities receive at award shows are taxable income.
The Internal Revenue Service and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences yesterday announced they have reached a settlement on undisclosed taxes owed to the government on the "gifts" received at the Oscars in the last several years, through 2005. The academy also announced it will no longer give out the bags, saying the board quietly voted last April to end the practice. In recent years, the academy has given the bags -- also known as gift bags or swag -- to as many as 200 hosts, performers and winners on Oscar night. "There's no special red-carpet tax loophole for the stars," IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson said in a prepared statement. "Whether you're popping the popcorn, sitting in the audience or starring on the big screen, you need to respect the law and pay your taxes."

Typically, if the IRS finds someone has failed to pay taxes but no fraud is involved, it assesses back taxes, interest and penalties for only the preceding three years. In this instance, if 200 people received $100,000 baskets in each of the three years through 2005, the taxable non-cash income would be $60 million. Neither IRS spokesmen nor Academy spokeswoman Leslie Unger would confirm or deny that number. Nor would they say whether, under the terms of the settlement, the IRS forgave back payment, interest and penalties. Nor would they say whether the Academy has paid a lump sum on behalf of past recipients.
The gifts bags did seem to be getting larger and more elaborate year after year. ShoppingBlog.com has more information about taxable swag bags.
