Coworkers Say Jon Stewart is a Class Act
By now most people know that Jon Stewart, the comic host of The Daily Show, will be hosting the Oscars this year. An entry on the L.A. Times Oscarbeat blog says Stewart has been a class act in the past -- he emceed the Grammys in 2002.It was Jon Stewart's first experience hosting a big awards show, and David Wild still remembers one moment vividly. Wild, a writer at that 2001 show, was backstage with Stewart when the neophyte emcee turned to him.Stewart will be a hit in our opinion.
"We were sitting there during a commercial break, and he asked if he could get me a soda," says Wild, who still laughs about the moment five years later. "I had to remind him--'Jon, you're the host, and we're in the middle of the show. You don't really need to be serving drinks at this point.'"
We don't know yet how funny, how entertaining, or how appropriate Stewart will be when he hosts the Oscars in a little less than two months. But judging from staffers who've worked with Stewart on past awards shows, we do know what he'll be like to work with: easy.
"I love him," says stage manager Dency Nelson, who worked on Stewart's two Grammy shows in 2001 and 2002, and on several other shows over the years. "He's smart, he's classy, and there's never a lot of baggage or hand-wringing."
